Having a big group family photo can be challenging since we must pay more attention during the portrait shoots, making sure that everyone is looking at the camera and not closing their eyes. It’s much easier to get the attention of adults compared to children, which usually are active or toddlers who are not yet able to follow the photographer’s directions as well as the adults does.
Patience and good communication are key to ensuring that we, as photographers, get their attention. Although it is well known that candid shots are popular for capturing moments and emotions, adding a sense of authenticity and spontaneity to the displayed memories, a conventional group shot is typically desired for framed photos in living rooms or other prominent areas of the house.
This is because they present everyone in a clear and organized manner, with all subjects looking at the camera. This makes for a more formal and polished display.
Ultimately, the preference depends on individual taste and the specific context of the photo. Some may choose a conventional group photo for its formality, while others might prefer candid shots for their emotional impact.
Therefore, a combination of conventional group photos and candid shots is our preferred approach in most family sessions.
